Petro de Luanda will represent Angola in the inaugural season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL), according to Basketballghana report.

The continental championship was due to commence on March 13 in Dakar, Senegal with more games planned to take place in Monastir, Tunisia on March 20.

However, those plans were scrapped as the league was suspended over fears of the corona virus spread which has infected over 50,000 people in Africa at the time of writing.

The Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB) released a statement to communicate its decision, “Petro Atletico de Luanda secure the right to represent Angola at BAL 2020-21 season”.

The decision was taken despite the Federation’s stance to not declare a winner for the 2019-2020 season in the African powerhouse.

Petro de Luanda led the league with 49 points five more points than Primeiro D’Agosto and Interclube de Luanda before the league was suspended due to the corona virus. Angola has 60 confirmed cases.

BAL is a partnership between FIBA Africa and the NBA and on resumption, 12 teams from the likes of Senegal, Tunisia and Nigeria will compete.
