The game between Ashantigold and Kumasi Asante Kotoko was expected to see more goals over the weekend looking at the history the fixture possesses.
However, it was the complete contrast of the expectations at the Len Clay Sport Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as both teams settled for a goalless draw.
Interim coach, Johnson Smith was facing one of his biggest test yet as the coach of the Porcupine Warriors and was looking to edge out the Miners, but which ever way they tried, they failed to beat Ashgold.
Both teams created enough chances that could have seen them walk away with all three points but were unlucky to see a ball hit the back of the net.
Kotoko came the closest to opening the scoring but ‘poster’ boy Fabio Gama’s header late in the game was unable to cause damage for the home side.
Prior to the Brazilian’s chance, Kwame Poku, who led Kotoko’s attack saw his first-half effort palmed away by goalkeeper Bailou Mohammed to deny the Kumasi-based club the lead.
Ashgold’s clear cut chance fell to Eric Esso, but the forward’s strike failed to hit target with the two teams going into the break with no goal.
After the recess, Kotoko enjoyed most of the possession but still struggled to penetrate into the opposition’s box to threaten the shot-stopper, with the home side’s backline holding a very uniform performance.
The game ended 0-0 despite the increased tempo in the last few minutes of the game, leaving Kotoko winless in their last two games while Ashgold search for a win after their last three games.
